"I've worked to empower historically marginalized voices for over 20 years."
Chiedu Egbuniwe is the founder and Principal of CE Impact Strategies, LLC. He is Board Chair of One Institute, the oldest LGBTQ+ nonprofit in the U.S., and serves on the Board of artEquity, a national resource for anti-racism, arts and activism. He sits on sub-committees supporting African American artists at Center Theater Group and the Geffen Playhouse. He is a Commissioner on the LGBTQ+ Commission for the City of West Hollywood.
Chiedu's name is pronounced "CHEE-ed-oo ee-BOO-nee-way"
Chiedu has extensive strategic experience in the arts and culture, LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations, and technology development. He is dedicated to using his diverse professional experience to create positive change.
After graduating from Johns Hopkins University, Chiedu worked as an IT Trainer and IT Manager at investment banks and law firms. He received certification in Diversity Equity and Inclusion from Cornell, focusing on implementing DEI programs, coaching inclusive leadership, fostering inclusive environments, counteracting bias, and measuring impact of DEI initiatives.
The principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility and Belonging are the driving forces in Chiedu's career. As an IT Trainer, he created equitable environments for learning and communication. As an IT Manager, he built diverse departments and enforced inclusive policies. At One Institute, he helped develop the strategic plan and helped write Mission, Value, and Vision statements. He served as Executive Producer for a virtual reading of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart, starring Sterling K. Brown and Laverne Cox, and directed by Emmy Award winner Paris Barclay. This production was the first to feature a predominantly BIPOC queer and trans cast and was a landmark in representation, inclusion and accessibility.
Prior to One Institute, Chiedu served on the Board of the Industry LA, an arts organization producing new operas, including Galileo and War of the Worlds at Walt Disney Hall. He worked closely with artistic director, Yuval Sharon to make opera accessible to people of all identities and socio-economic backgrounds, and to create conversations around inclusion in the arts.
Chiedu served on the Executive Committee for Outfest, the Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival. He was a proud mentor for the Outset program, working closely with under-24-year-old, BIPOC queer and trans filmmakers to make short films and amplify marginalized voices. He was heavily involved with Fusion, the People of Color LGBTQ Film Festival of Los Angeles and the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project, which helps to preserve LGBTQ films.
Chiedu was born in Massachusetts and raised in West Virginia and Georgia. Being raised as the child of Nigerian and Jamaican immigrants in the South, Chiedu experienced the impact of marginalization, especially in terms of storytelling, controlling the narrative and access to life-changing resources and opportunities. He has written articles on opera for publications including The Advocate, and has written, produced and directed LGBTQ+ short films that have screened around the world.
